The official residence of the President of Romania, it also houses the Cotroceni National Museum. The construction of this new royal palace was commissioned to begin in the year 1893, the project being placed under the direction of the French architect Paul Gottereau. At the 30th day of December 1947, King Michael I was forced to abdicate by the communists and the new government had control of the palace which was then uninhabited by the royal family.Since 1991, the historical body of the palace was opened to visitors, becoming the Cotroceni Museum. In 2009, after extensive restoration works, the Cotroceni church was also included in the museum route.
