Between college and graduate school, Alek switched from literature to anthropology. Despite an increase in the number of interdisciplinary initiatives bridging the two professions, this was a substantial shift. He had to refocus himself from the archive to the field throughout the first few years of his PhD program. Rather than focusing on the life of language in literature, he began to look at notions about language that circulated outside of the printed page and outside of the scholarly record.
Aleksey graduated from Jagiellonian University in Kraków with a bachelor's degree. He received a master's degree from Stanford University and a PhD from Adam Mickiewicz University.
