South America has three major geographic terrains, though the continent is home to a diverse range of biomes, including extreme environments such as the Atacama Desert in northern Chile (the world's driest place) and Aconcagua in Argentina, the tallest mountain outside of Asia (9,962 meters). Mountains and highlands, river basins, and coastal plains are the three major terrain types.
