Galichnik Wedding Festival

St. Peter’s day 12th of July, Galichnik is alive as it used to be. It is a day of splendid costumes, magnificent ceremonies and rituals of the unique Galichnik Wedding whose wider significance comes to its crown by entering the treasury of spiritual values of humanity under UNESCO protection. In the past the wedding ceremonies lasted five days and the wedding was traditionally held on St. Peter’s Day. Each day of the wedding has special ceremonies which are performed according to established costumes. Waiting for the drums, the folk dance – “Svekrvinooro” (Mother in law’s dance), taking the bride to the fountain, setting the wedding flag, inviting the dead, shaving the groom, taking the bride, kneading the bread, marriage ceremony in the church of St. Pater and Paul. There used to be over 40 weddings on St. Peter’s Day in Galichnik, and now Galichnik Wedding Festival is a tourist event and a real wedding for which every year two young people are chosen to get married on that day. One of the preconditions is that at least one of the young originates from a family in Galichnik.
