Marko Towers are among the most solid and unassailable five fortress in the Balkans.
The fortress was being developed from the 4th century BC to the 14th century AD in the vicinity of the city of Prilep.
Pelagonia was an important crossroad during the antique period connecting the Adriatic Sea with the Aegean Sea. One part of Via Militaris (Singidunum - Constantinopolis) was passing through Prilep, and it continued with Via Egnatia (Durachium - Amfipolis). Prilep represented a frortree of Krali Marko (King Marko) and because of the fortress with its dominant defensive system, the medievial Prilep was famous in the Blakan.
The medieval fortress Marko Towers in 1953 was proclaimed a monument of culture and it represents a symbol of the city.
